WHAT IS METH

Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive central nervous system stimulant
that is mainly used as a recreational drug and less commonly as a second-line
treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity.

It takes the form of a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that
easily dissolves in water or alcohol.



WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A METH LAB AND A USER SITE?

A meth lab can be set up using common household equipment and chemicals. The
different ways of making meth can involve explosives, solvents, metals, salts,
and corrosives. Meth labs have been found in homes, sheds, barns, motel and
hotel rooms, outside in the woods, and can also be classed as rolling meth labs
in car trunks that are often moved to a secluded location where the strong,
toxic fumes of methamphetamine manufacture cannot be detected and where the
toxic manufacturing byproducts can be discarded.

A user site is a place where regular smoking of methamphetamine has impacted the
environment either inside or outside of the property.

WHAT IS THE HEALTH IMPACT OF RESIDUE FROM METH?

The health risks associated with methamphetamine manufacturing or use
contamination are highest for children who live in these contaminated
environments when compared to adults. Children’s metabolic processes are more
susceptible to the effects of chemicals/ drugs than adults. The most reported
symptoms of methamphetamine exposure include headache, nausea/ vomiting,
respiratory difficulty and eye irritation.

Due to the contamination to the structure from the different chemicals that can
be used to manufacture methamphetamine, meth manufacture holds the highest risk
for health-related symptoms compared to contamination from a user.

ARE THERE ANY SIGNS MY PROPERTY HAS BEEN UTILIZED FOR METH PRODUCTION?

When chemicals, waste materials or operations are identified that are suspected
to be associated with a clandestine drug laboratory or hydroponic plantation,
Landlord/property managers should immediately leave the premises (without
touching or handling anything) and inform the police. 

 Clandestine Drug Laboratory Indicators 

 * Windows blacked out or blocked, and strange or unusual ventilation
 * Presence of unusually high level of security
 * Strong odours of acetone, ammonia, solvents or sour “cat urine” type odours
 * Large numbers of matches
 * Large quantities of empty cold medication packages
 * Jars or containers (often modified) filled with clear liquid with white or
   red solids at the bottom, or containers with two layered liquids (one darker
   and one more pale)
 * Containers empty or full (labelled as acids, starter fluids, rubbing alcohol,
   solvents)
 * Presence of caustic drain cleaners/openers, iodine containers or crystals,
   instant cold packs
 * Coffee filters, sheets, pillowcases or old clothing with a white pasty
   substance, red sludge or crystals
 * Burns, powder residues, crystalline residues on benches
 * Propane tanks with fittings that have turned blue
 * Presence of various jars, glassware (including round or flat bottom flasks)
 * Heating devices such as camp stoves and hot plates
 * Presence of tubing, pumps, coffee grinder, compressed gas tanks

IS TESTING THE ONLY WAY TO CONFIRM OR REFUTE METH CONTAMINATION IN A HOUSE?

Yes, this is correct. As meth contamination is typically invisible, testing is
the only way to confirm or deny meth’s presence in a property. 

DIY test kids are available and are usually a good starting point for homeowners
or prospective homeowners who are suspicious of a property’s history.

If a DIY test kit returns a positive result, further inspection and laboratory
testing can be carried out by IECL trained technicians to confirm both the
existence and level of contamination present within the property.

considered to pose that risk varies around the world.
