UNDERSTANDING BIRTH ECLASS
The Understanding Birth eClass is FREE if you are planning to give birth at
Providence Saint John’s Health Center. Please contact our Patient Engagement
Center to register for your Free eClass or if you need any other assistance
at (877) 227-3457.
*This is an ongoing eClass which is a self-pace learning experience. Once you
register you will receive an email with the necessary access code to build
your account. You will then have 270days/9months to view and participate in
this class. NO REFUNDS will be available after you have purchased the class.
Understanding Birth eClass, is a comprehensive, evidence-based go-to guide is
designed to help expectant parents navigate the exciting yet challenging
experience of childbirth and postpartum.
Watch several real-life birth stories to get a sense of what labor is really
like. Learn about options to help create your personalized birth plan. You
will find what is best for you and your family as your experience unfolds. We
recommend that this eClass be taken two months prior to your due date. Allow
4 to 6 hours to complete.
CONTENT
• Pregnancy: Anatomy, fetal development, nutrition, discomforts, warning
signs, preterm labor, emotions, strength and stretching exercises,
risk-factors, and more
• Labor: Pre-labor signs, onset of labor, stages of labor, 4 P’s of Labor,
pain theories, and the importance of skin-to-skin contact.
• Birth Stories: How the stages of labor unfold in real life, natural coping
techniques, medicated pain relief, and the value of partner support.
• Comfort Techniques: Labor support, breathing, relaxation, massage,
visualization, focal points, hydrotherapy, labor & pushing positions, back
labor, and partner insights.
• Medical Procedures: Management of labor and birth, fetal monitoring, IVs,
augmentation, induction, pain medication, second-stage interventions, and
nonmedical alternatives.
• Cesarean Birth: Reasons for a cesarean, risks factors, anesthesia, 3D
animation of surgery, recovery, breastfeeding, family-centered birth tips.
• Newborns: Newborn appearance, value of skin-to-skin contact, newborn
senses, behaviors, first feeding, newborn hospital procedures, SIDS.

Understanding Breastfeeding eClass!
One of the most important choices a new mother makes is how best to nourish
her baby. This online class is a convenient way to prepare for breastfeeding
your newborn in the privacy of your home. It provides the essential
information to help increase your self-confidence in your ability to
breastfeed. This interactive course features evidenced- based recommendations
from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and International Lactation
Consultant Association (ILCA). You will learn through instructive video
clips, animation, live footage, and interactive games. Allow 2-3 hours to
complete.
CONTENT
• How breastfeeding works: 3D breast anatomy and milk production animation,
colostrum, breastmilk qualities, why breastfeeding is important, AAP
exclusivity recommendations.
• Getting the best start: Sharing breastfeeding plans with hospital staff,
skin-to-skin contact, rooming-in, lactation consultants, pacifier
recommendations.
• Latching on: Reclined and upright positions, 3D animation comparing deep
and shallow latches.
• Breastfeeding positions: Laid-back, cross-cradle, football, side-lying,
cradle hold.
• When to feed your baby: Hunger and satiation cues, feeding patterns and
