history, is often quoted in the national financial media, and has written for
Morningstar, Money Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. His title on the
history of world trade, A Splendid Exchange, was short-listed for the 2008
Financial Times/Goldman Sachs best business book award, and was designated a
best book of the year by the Economist. He was the 2017 recipient of the CFA
Institute's James Vertin Award for financial research.

I have read most if not all of Bill Bernstein's books, mostly about investments
- which made me one of his investment disciples just before I started to wind
down my career and retire in the late 1990s (for which I am most grateful
because his advice served my retirement portfolio extremly well throughout the
past two recessions, the last being the worst since the great depression). But I
also like his writting style and ability to make the history of trade (this
book) and the history of finance (The Birth of Plenty) both intertaining and
informative. Every invester should be interested in learning how our economy and
financial institutions came to be, and both of these historys are a great place
to begin.

I am sure that many of the things described in this book appear in economic
history textbooks but I doubt if any are as readable. The account romps through
centuries of complex geopolitics to explain why trade - as much as finance - is
the lifeblood of social and economic development. The story never slows. It
seems authentic and -in those few areas I know- accurate. I'd strongly recommend
it to anyone who likes to know how the world ticks, or ticked, and why Doha is
so important to us all.

The book is a fine primer in trade and the ideas of Adam Smith, David Ricardo
and more recent economists, such as Paul Samuelson.
The entertaining and lively writing style of the author should not obscure the
underlying strength of the book which rests on its analytical rigour and the way
in which the author weaves in the theoretical and the practical.
The book is a timely reminder of the benefits accrued by trade in an era in
which globalisation gets a bad press. People tend to focus on the undesirable
effects such as the threat to the environment by the phenomenal growth of
Chinese manufacturing exports, the outsourcing by corporations and the
re-emergence of inflation as oil and food prices soar. At the same time they
underplay the benefits such as the boost to Western living standards from
inexpensive Chinese goods and the lifting of literally hundreds of millions of
Asians above poverty level.
We follow the author as he unfolds his story to show how trade evolved and
shaped the world. The story begins with Sumerian farmers in the third millenium
BC who bartered grain surpluses generated in the Mesopotamian fertile crescent
for copper obtained from Sinai several hundred miles to the West to make weapons
to repel nomadic raiders.
The author discusses the Peloponessian war between Athens and Sparta to
highlight the wider point about the importance and vulnerability of sea-lanes.
The story continues with the rise and fall of Venice and Genoa, the devastation
caused by the Black Death, the Portuguese-led age of discovery, the
establishment of the Dutch and British East India trading companies, the golden
period of the late 19th century in which trade flourished under the British
empire and the 20th century's descent into protectionism.
The author emphasizes the role of technology in promoting trade, especially the
advent of steam and refrigeration.
Finally the author articulates the fringe benefits derived from trade such as
exchanges of art, science and ideas and in promoting understanding among peoples
in different lands.

This is a wonderful book, easy to read and cleverly organised both thematically
and historically.
Adam Smith was not the first to remark mankind's predilection for truck barter
and exchange. Berstein begins his sweeping historical survey 5,000 years ago
with the Sumerians and ends it with the anti-globalisation protests today.
I might quibble. There are precious few graphs and statistical tables. Some
might be grateful for the lack of tractor production results in the Ukraine, but
exactly how big was a standard Jardine-Matthieson opium chest, and how many
dope-fiends could it supply? And so on. Bernstein discusses refrigerated
transport at length but rather skates over the Columbian exchange. I know which
I'd nominate as the more important improvement in nutrition.
Bernstein is a free market free trade ideologue. (So am I.) But I think he lets
the protectionists and mercantilists off too lightly. True, there are losers
from free trade, but they are fewer and more temporary than he, quoting
Samuelson and Rogowski, implies. I admire his attempt to be fair-minded, though
I will not imitate it.
Bernstein writes clearly and commands his subject with ease and grace. Anyone
wanting to know why Malthus was wrong should read this book. Anyone wanting to
know how we can alleviate third world poverty should read this book.

In this book the author tells the story of the world through trade from Sumer to
our days. You learn something new in every chapter and what's more important
it's now just a collection of facts or stories. By the end you have a framework
to think about the world history so that you can even explain events outside the
book.
The highlights are: the role of Islam in trade and growth, the role of diseases,
the role of particular spices, the real story behind the War for Independence
and so on.
The only problem with the book is that it spends a bit too much time talking
about ancient history and virtually zero time on the 20th century. I assume this
is done because recent history is less ambiguous but it would still be nice to
read.

This book was so fascinating. I almost immediately found stories that were worth
re-telling (like the one about the discovery of coffee by observing the effects
on animals!). A succinct and connected view of world history from the point of
view of economics and trade. The only thing I found a little bit difficult to
follow was the timeline, as the book is organised by topic. I ended up drawing a
timeline on the inside back cover so that I could connect all the things up and
follow across the dates; if the author had included one in his illustrations
that would have been very helpful.
