FEDERAL WAY CAR INSURANCE

Along the shores of Puget Sound between the cities of Tacoma and Seattle in the
state of Washington is the city of Federal Way.

The origin of this unusual name is a logging settlement that had a U.S. highway
99 location. Later, a high school was built on the same highway and named
Federal Way High School. The high school anchored additional development and in
the early 1950’s, the community became a town.

The local chamber of commerce officially named the town Federal Way since was it
was the most familiar moniker.

The shore side location of Federal Way puts this town on the rainy side of
Washington State. The rainy side is known as the more expensive side when it
comes to car insurance prices.

Washington State does not require car insurance in order to be a licensed driver
but the state does require all licensed drivers to demonstrate the financial
ability to pay for any damages or injuries caused by a car accident.
Establishing financial responsibility can be done in the following ways:

WASHINGTON STATE'S FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY REQUIREMENT

The Financial Responsibility requirements in Washington include:

• Business owners with fleets of 26 or more vehicles can become self-insured.
• A licensed driver may purchase a certificate of deposit with a value of
$60,000.
• $60,000 dollars may be deposited with the state Treasurers office.
• A 60,000 dollar liability bond may be purchased from a Washington State surety
bond provider.
• A licensed driver can choose to purchase car insurance with a minimum of
$25,000 per person for injury, $50,000 per accident for injury and $10,000 per
accident for property damage.

For almost all drivers in Federal Way, purchasing car insurance is the simplest
way to demonstrate financial ability to pay for injury or damage due to car
accidents even though there are other options.

Because Federal Way is a city within the state of Washington, the required
minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person for injury or death, $50,000
per accident for injury or death and $10,000 per accident for property damage
which is not the highest minimum required by any state, but many states have
lower minimum requirements.

> It is not required in Federal Way to purchase uninsured or under-insured
> motorist. Additionally, unlike many other states, Washington State insurance
> companies are required to offer personal injury protection.

Personal injury protection or PIP will help pay for certain costs after an
accident such as medical costs, funeral costs and loss of income. Not only are
insurance companies required to offer PIP in the city of Federal Way,but if this
optional coverage is refused by the consumer, the refusal must be in writing.

Licensed drivers of Federal Way as well as injured passengers and pedestrians
have several options when involved in a car accident.

• They can make a claim with their own insurance company.
• Make a claim by contacting the insurance company of the at-fault driver.
• File a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver for monetary
damages.

ENFORCEMENT

Insurance compliance in Federal Way is managed by traffic stops. All drivers
must have proof of financial responsibility or a valid car insurance card
available in the vehicle at all times.

If a driver is stopped by a traffic officer without proof of financial
responsibility, the fine may be as high as $450. If a driver has a valid
insurance policy but no legal proof at the time of a traffic stop, the driver
will have to go to court to have charges removed and will still be assessed a
court processing fee.

HIGH-RISK DRIVERS

Drivers who are denied car insurance because of past violations or accidents can
apply for coverage through the Washington Automobile Insurance Plan.

This plan allows Washington car insurance companies to share the risk of
covering high-risk drivers. Rates are much higher than with standard insurance
providers so it is a good idea to conduct research to be sure that the regular
market is not an option.
